Leaders and militants of the government coalition and Popular Unity call to vote for Yes

luke

Through a letter they assure that the LUC is “the expression of authoritarianism in democracy: meaning the Law of arrogance”.

They question that the Emergency Law implies “a setback in acquired rights, the reduction of individual guarantees, cuts in social spending, and installs processes of privatization of public companies, and negative reforms in public education.”

Statement

Here is the full text:

“The undersigned leaders, former leaders and militants of political parties that are members of the government coalition and Popular Unity express:

That they call for a vote for Yes in the next referendum on 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration that will take place on March 27, on the understanding that it is an authoritarian legislative reform, without consultation, carried out in the midst of a health emergency without due democratic processes of discussion and debate.

For what we maintain and affirm with all conviction that the LUC is the expression of authoritarianism in democracy: meaning the Law of arrogance.

We do not share as a way of governing to introduce such important changes in the lives of citizens by way of urgent consideration, trampling over achievements and rights acquired long ago.

We understand that the LUC is the law of arrogance, which implements modifications that imply regression in acquired rights, reduction of individual guarantees, cuts in social spending, installs processes of privatization of public companies, absolutely negative reforms in public education, among other changes that harm the rights of the most vulnerable and unprotected.

Convinced that the LUC does not represent the democratic and republican traditions that have forged the national identity, we understand that voting “Yes” is the decision that fully implies consecrating a position of firm respect towards the rich ideological-cultural heritage of Uruguay and consequently of worthy patriotic vindication.

Based on the foregoing, we declare our firmest adherence to the referendum proposal and call on all citizens to vote Yes for the annulment of the 135 articles of the LUC”.
