Fernando Pereira assumed this Saturday the presidency of the Broad Front and thus closed one of the most difficult chapters for the political force in recent decades. Whoever was president of the PIT-CNT was proclaimed by the Plenary of the Front in the El Galpón Theater, with reduced capacity due to the pandemic and without the possibility of continuing the celebration in a massive event that was planned in the Parque Rodó and that ended up being suspended by the climate threat.

“The unanimity of the Frente Amplio leadership long ago decided that the main objective until March 27 is to build a new majority with modesty, but behind the social organizations and those who faced the campaign to repeal 135 articles of the LUC“, declared Pereira from the stage, tinted pink in favor of the Yes vote. “There are winds that indicate that March 27 will be a victory, not for our political force, but for the Uruguayan people,” he predicted.

The leader announced who will be the members of the team that will accompany him for five years in the direction of the Broad Front. The leader had established to promote figures of weight that return the power to the structure of the leftist coalition, subjugated to the national governments of the political force.

The vice president will be Verónica Piñeiro, a member of the Frente Amplio ranks and current environmental manager at the Municipality of Montevideo, while the political secretary will correspond to Daniel Mariño, who accompanied Pereira for years when he was in the union movement.

Finance will continue in the hands of Flavia García while the communist Manuel Ferrer will head the National Organization Commission. The new commission on Gender and Feminism promoted by the new president will be headed by Patricia González, political scientist and former director of the Women’s Secretariat of the Montevideo City Hall.

In the area of ​​Culture will be the actress Gabriela Iribarren, a member of the Party for the Victory of the People, who was a candidate for the Montevideo Departmental elections in these last elections, where Graciela Villar ended up winning. The International Affairs and Relations Commission (Carifa) will be in the hands of former Deputy Foreign Minister Ariel Bergamino, while the relaunch of the old Interior Commission will be led by the former mayor of Rocha, Aníbal Pereyra (MPP).

The socialist senator Daniel Olesker will be in charge of Social Affairs, while the former president of the Montevideo Departmental Board and leader of the Vertiente Artiguista, Adriana Barros, will head the Human Rights area. The former director of the Office of Planning and Budget (OPP), Álvaro García and former mayor Ricardo Ehrlich will share the Programs Commission.

The former candidate for the presidency of the Broad Front, Ivonne Passada, will be in charge of government coordination, and the former mayor Christian Di Candia will lead the political formation of the Líber Seregni Foundation.

In his inaugural speech, Pereira predicted “winds of change” in the region, appealed to the arrival of the departmental and municipal authorities of the Broad Front, and sent several nods to the youth.
