The mayor of Montevideo, Carolina Cosse, presented this Thursday Naming is recognizing, within the framework of the Diversity Month, an initiative that proposes changes to the street gazetteer to “recognize and repair” members of the Afro-Uruguayan and LGBTQ+ communities. The proposal will now go to the Departmental Board, where the change or not for the streets of the Sur, Palermo and Ciudad Vieja neighborhoods will be defined.
«What we are recognizing in these people is a long struggle, which does not start with us. They are the symbol of some aspect of those struggles and have a twinning with stories from the past and the present, “said Cosse.
The proposed changes cover several streets from Avenida 18 de Julio to La Rambla, as has already happened with other streets such as Yaguarón (Aquiles Lanza), Yi (Carlos Quijano), Cuareim (Zelmar Michelini) and General Rondeau (Héctor Gutiérrez Ruiz). .
The proposed changes are:
- Gaboto Street by Lágrima Ríos
- Minas Street by Martha Gularte
- Rio Negro Street by Rosa Luna
- Magallanes Street by Carlos “Pirulo” Albin
- In addition, Old Police Street by Gloria Meneses and 17 Meters by Virginia Brindis de Salas.
The selection of names was made based on the prominent role that these people they occupied in the different spaces they integrated. They were pioneers and revolutionized the culture, and they maintained a commitment to their time.
