Uruguay is the only country with “58%” of renewable energy in America and the Caribbean

In the Energy and Mines Commission of the Parlatino, (America and the Caribbean) which integrates the deputy Martín Melazzi, the central issue was affordable, non-polluting energies and the state of approach to this problem in the face of the 2030 agenda.

On the one hand, there was a very fruitful presentation by a member of ECLAC, Mr. Ruben Contreras, with more than 25 years of experience working in the areas of the environment, energy, sustainable agriculture and climate change.

For his part, deputy Martín Melazzi (Soriano, Colorado Party) stressed that the world is beginning to go through the 2nd energy transition, betting more on energy from indigenous or renewable sources than on fossil resources. In the year 2027, the maximum peak of hydrocarbon extraction will be reached, beginning to decline the reserves worldwide. This opens doors for Uruguay in the production of Green Hydrogen and in electromobility.

He added that in order to achieve decarbonization, countries must bet on making investments and thus not depend on economic and geopolitical instabilities, something that Uruguay has done very well in the last 30 years.

He highlighted the importance of seizing market opportunities in global and regional low-carbon energy supply and value chains.

In his presentation, Uruguay stood out for being the only country that out of the total of the primary matrix or supply matrix, 58% is the participation of renewable sources, surpassing for the fifth consecutive year the participation of oil and derivatives.
Our country also stands out in the electrical transformation sector where 76% of the contracted power corresponds to renewable sources while 24% to non-renewable energy.

Finally, there was a debate among the participants, agreeing to exchange the policies carried out by each of the countries, as well as their legislation to continue advancing towards a better use of renewable energies.
