On Saturday, May 28, the National Union of Metal Workers and Allied Branches reported that the transnational company Cinter Aperam resolved in a “unilateral and definitive” manner the total suspension of its production operations in Uruguay, betting on only carrying out its production in the plant. industry in Brazil, leaving 150 families on the streets, including plant workers and administrative personnel, plus some 30 families that will be indirectly affected among canteen, supplier, transport and security workers.

This Monday, the Minister of Labor and Social Security (MTSS), Pablo Mieres, told Montevideo Portal that he called for “a negotiation table between the parties”, which will take place this Tuesday, May 31.

Mieres acknowledged that the company’s announcement “seems to be a fait accompli”, but in any case the company’s representatives confirmed their participation in the tripartite instance.

Conflict

While UNTMRA declared itself in conflict and will take all measures at its disposal to denounce this situation of high economic and social impact.

At the same time, the union demanded that the government take the necessary measures and actions in defense of the industry and national workforce.

They remember that there are several factories that recently left the country: Lifan, Faurencia and now Cinter Aperam, a global player in stainless steel, electrical and special steel.
