IDB reaches record US$23.4 billion in financing and mobilization for 2021

IDB, Washington headquarters

The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) and its private sector arm, IDB Invest, achieved a record $23.4 billion in new financing approvals, commitments, and mobilizations from the private sector.

In this way, the organization exceeds the initial estimates previously reported on financial assistance to Latin America and the Caribbean in 2021.

The figure reflects additional and updated numbers, including pledges and mobilizations, partnerships, and donations to Haiti.

The new record includes IDB Invest mobilizing more private funds in 2021—nearly $3 billion—than in any other year in its history.

The total also includes record or near-record levels of IDB financing approvals in priority areas for the region’s sustainable and inclusive growth and recovery, including health and the response to COVID-19, climate change, supply and digitization.

The IDB and IDB Invest reported in December that they expected combined approvals and commitments for 2021 to total nearly $20 billion, and $22.3 billion if IDB Invest mobilization figures were included.

The updated figure of $3.0 billion of IDB Invest mobilization replaces the previous estimate of $2.8 billion. Together with revised figures for IDB Invest commitments and new financing included by the IDB and IDB Lab, the 2021 total amounts to the largest sum of financing accounted for by the institutions in a calendar year.

IDB financing highlights include a record amount of financing for climate change-related projects ($4.5 billion) and a record level of financing to strengthen regional supply chains ($2.3 billion).
