Tourism would generate a million jobs this year, estimates Promperú

The tourism sector could contribute 2.5% to the gross domestic product (GDP) and would generate one million jobs during this 2022, estimated the Commission for the Promotion of Peru for Exports and Tourism ().

According to the state entity, this projection is lower than the figure recorded before the pandemic, but an advance compared to 2021.

The contribution that tourism provides to the GDP is important to us. In 2021, the contribution made by the sector was 2% of GDP, but before the pandemic we came to represent 3.9%. For this 2022 we estimate that we will have a recovery and we expect that the GDP will represent 2.5% of the GDP”, the executive president of Promperú, Amora Carbajal, told the Andina news agency.

Likewise, Carbajal hopes that this year our country will receive a greater number of international tourists, so that jobs in the sector will increase.

We project for this year to receive 540,000 foreign visitors (far from 2019 when some 4.5 million arrived), being conservative and that we have a million jobs in the sector”, he indicated.

The official stressed that tourists from the South American region (Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Brazil) are the first to return to Peru, due to its proximity and connectivity.

However, the Promperú executive said that they are also launching an international campaign aimed at markets such as the United States, Spain, France, Chile, Brazil, Colombia and Mexico.
