The number of pre-registered students who go from school to high school reaches one of the highest values since 2016

42,115 students pre-registered to attend basic secondary education in 2023, which constitutes “one of the highest values since the beginning of this educational transit modality”informed the National Administration of Public Education (ANEP) in its preliminary report on the closing of the EMB Pre-registration stage 2022-2023.

By 2023, the 42,115 students come from different programs that ANEP has. 39,482 come from common primary education2,179 of special education and 375 of prioritized programs of the ANEP and the Ministry of Social Development. In turn there is 79 students who signed up after the system load closed but are already enabled.

The lowest number of pre-registered had been in 2018 (to study in 2019) when they had signed up 39,998 students to attend secondary education. In subsequent years the figures were higher. To attend in 2020 were 41,216to study in 2021 were 41,845. To study in 2022 the figure had dropped a little and was located 41,543 noted.

If only those recorded by the General Directorate of Initial and Primary Education are counted (which includes only those of primary education and special education), the figure reaches 41,661the highest figure since 2016 when they had been 42,689.

But as for those not pre-registered, the figure falls sharply. In 2020 (to study in 2021) they had not pre-registered 1497 students, in 2021 it dropped to 870 while in 2022 they did not pre-register only 336 students, the lowest figure since 2016.

“Given our demographic trend, there will be fewer and fewer students (within 6 years, approximately 35,000), which means that we cannot lose a single one and we must improve the quality of their learning,” Juan Gabito told The Observer.

Continue downloading the registration to UTU

When deciding in which system they decide to study basic secondary education, the lyceum continues to be the most preferred option with 302,252 enrolled. But, despite the growth in the number of potential students, UTU enrollment is lower in relative terms. In 2019, to study in 2020, they had pre-registered 10593 students. That amount went down over the years until it reached 8935 to study in 2023. “This implies a decrease in the relative weight that UTU has among the first-choice preferences that, after a significant growth in the first three years of pre-registration, changes the direction and there is a reduction that exceeds 25.7% at the point higher to 21.2% in the present early registration”, affirms the ANEP in its document.
