telenovela la Fuerza del Deseo

The force of Desire: a love story between Ester and Ignacio

Mexico City, Mexico.- At the beginning of the 2000s, this story of love and pride captivated the Cuban audience. It is about The Force of Desire. A highly successful Brazilian telenovela, produced and broadcast on TV Globo.

The story, starring Malu Mader and Fábio Assunção, introduces Ester Delamare, a liberal woman and owner of the most famous brothel in Rio de Janeiro in the 19th century. Nobles and millionaires came to her prosperous business. She had at her feet practically the man she wanted, but they used to cause her apathy until she met one a little younger than her and who lived in Villa de Sant’Anna, a prosperous city in the interior. She left there because of her bad relationship with her father, caused by how he punished his wife and Ignacio’s mother, Elena.

The story takes place in a political and social context of transformations and confrontations (beginning of the abolitionist movement and the rise of the wealthy bourgeoisie). It was the year 1860 when Ester falls in love with Ignacio Sobral, the son of a landowner, but a mysterious letter breaks her heart, separates them from her and she decides to marry another man.

This man turns out to be Ignacio’s father and that is where the main plot of the soap opera is woven: a love triangle full of entanglements. In addition, there are other parallel stories, such as the rivalry between Baron Henrique Sobral and Higino Ventura.

Another well-remembered character is that of Ignacio’s younger brother, Abelardo and his struggle to be like his brother and his passion for the beautiful and complicated Alicia.

The telenovela, which was broadcast in Brazil from May 10, 1999 to January 29, 2000, was a great success, with good audience acceptance and a great performance by the cast.

The story caused a sensation in Cuba, where it gained a large following thanks to its intrigue, romance and drama, hallmarks of Brazilian telenovelas.
