On vacation, people tend to gain three to five kilos of weight and increase their cholesterol and uric acid levels, due to lack of control in the diet and the greater consumption of foods rich in fats and carbohydrates, said the postgraduate academic of the Faculty of Medicine of the UNAM, Sergio Alberto Mendoza Álvarez.

One parameter that we use, he said, is the alteration of glycosylated hemoglobin. This test measures the average level of glucose, or sugar, in your blood over the past three months. The other factor is hyperuricemia, that is, the elevation of uric acid in the blood due to the high consumption of meat.

He indicated that in Mexico cardiovascular diseases (including diabetes, hypertension, chronic kidney failure, among others) are the leading cause of death, and that is why it is important for the population to know their risks and to have good eating habits.

He explained that after rest periods, it is common for patients who normally control their glucose – at levels of 100 to 120 – with parameters of 180 or 200, to come to the office.

Mendoza Álvarez recommends that adolescents perform physical activities during vacations, preferably 45 minutes a day, as well as go to the pediatrician to evaluate their weight and height, and check if they correspond to what is expected for their age.

also suggested eat carrots, cucumbers, or jicama instead of snacks like potatoes. As for alcoholic beverages, they can have two drinks a day, but if they exceed it, the amount of calories causes triglycerides to increase.
