The official ceremony, presided over by Army General Raúl Castro Ruz, was held in the Granma room of the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (FAR) and brought together the top brass of the regime.

Raúl Castro, former father-in-law of López-Calleja, known as the czar of the Cuban economy, placed a white rose before his remains. The ruler Miguel Díaz-Canel did the same, according to the official photos of the farewell.

Also present at the official ceremony were members of the Political Bureau Esteban Lazo, president of the National Assembly; Salvador Valdés Mesa, Vice President of the Republic; Manuel Marrero, prime minister; Roberto Morales Ojeda, deputy prime minister; Generals Álvaro López Miera and Lázaro Alberto Álvarez Casas, ministers of the FAR and MININT, respectively, and commanders José Ramón Machado Ventura and Ramiro Valdés.

Division General Luis Alberto Rodríguez López-Calleja, executive president of the Business Administration Group of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (GAESA), died this Friday, July 1, as a result of cardiorespiratory arrest, according to the official newspaper Granma.

“With deep regret we inform our people that in the early hours of the morning of this Friday, July 1, as a result of a cardiorespiratory arrest, Division General Luis Alberto Rodríguez López-Calleja passed away,” the official media said last Friday. .

According to official information, relatives of the deceased were also present at the farewell, “including his widow and his eldest children Raúl and Vilma.”

López-Calleja, 62, head of GAESA, a network that controls around 70 percent of the national economy, including hotel investments and bank accounts, had been a member of the Party’s Central Committee since 2011. In April 2021 he was promoted to the Political Bureau and in October, elected deputy to the National Assembly for the municipality of Remedios, Villa Clara.
