People’s Force asks authorities to postpone the increase in the electricity tariff

The People’s Force He asked the government to postpone the application of the increase to the electricity tariff. According to the Secretary of Energy of FP, Juan Gómez, through a statement, said request is based on the reality that the Dominican population is already too hit by the cost of the family basket.

The head of the secretariat that works with energy issues within the political organization released a report prepared in conjunction with the different vice secretaries, which states that this increase will negatively impact the economy of the poorest class of the country, as well as the middle class.

“For the two-month period November-December 2021 there will be a variation in the prices of the tariff, which will affect users with the lowest income level in the population, as well as small businesses. Customers of distribution companies with ranges of consumption between 100 and 500 kWh, will receive an average increase of 3% “, states the statement.

The document goes on to say that the money that the State will collect if these increases are applied is significant. “According to the Superintendency of Electricity (SIE), the increases will be minimal, but it will mean about 90 million pesos per month, that is, a very significant amount because per year it means more than one billion, which will come out of the pockets of the population. , which will increase poverty levels “, he emphasizes.

“The SIE argues that it will be a minimum percentage of 1.4% every three months and linear for 5 years, but that accumulated in this time would give 20%”

“This will have a hard impact on the economy of homes, micro and small companies, and this could be aggravated by the rise in fuels, which under a technical rate regime would have to be transferred to end users,” the statement from the Ministry of Energy of FP.

Gómez explained that in the social and political order it is inappropriate to speak of an increase in the electricity rate in the current circumstances, with a population hit by unemployment and an increase in the family basket as a result of the crisis caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. It suggests in this sense that the resolution should consider a social rate.

It also indicates that the system has serious weaknesses that must be corrected before applying these increases, how to improve the reduction of losses, both technical and non-technical.

In the same order, the statement presented by the FP energy holder says that, “the implementation of the proposed transition scheme must be accompanied by the establishment of compensation to customers by the distribution companies, for non-compliance with the indicators quality of service established, both commercial and technical “.

Among the quality indicators we would have compensation for unserved power, frequency of blackouts, duration of these interruptions, as well as the non-maintenance of power levels, voltage and nominal frequency.
