A few days before the referendum on 135 articles of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) that will be put to the consideration of the citizens next Sunday, the president of the FA, Fernando Pereira, stated that regardless of the result, there must be a table dialogue between the opposition and the government.

“If the ‘Yes’ wins or the ‘No’ wins, we have to talk. Uruguay needs solutions to problems that are raised,” Pereira said in an interview with Radiomundo’s En Perspectiva.

The president of the FA said that the government of Luis Lacalle Pou “must do what it should have always done, that is, dialogue with half of the country.”

“Dialogue does not imply agreeing, it implies seeking more general consensus policies. Winning a government does not mean ignoring the rest of society, those who think differently, there will be issues on which we agree and issues on which we do not”, he stated.

In this sense, he exemplified that in this dialogue table between the government and the opposition, it is necessary to work on issues of citizen security or housing policies.

culture of dialogue

“If the ‘Yes’ vote wins, we will always talk. We are not here to hinder the government, but we are the opposition,” he said.

He stressed that a “culture of dialogue” must be generated, which implies that in victory or defeat all parties are in dispute to talk.

Pereira clarified that in the intention of the promoters of the referendum “there is nothing more than to repeal 135 articles, and the government has insisted on saying something else”, referring to the questioning that the opposition “puts spokes in the wheel” to prevent the multicolored coalition from carrying out its government program.”
