Coronavirus: which vaccines generated the most side effects?

The General Directorate of Medicines, Supplies and Drugs (Digemid) the Ministry of Health recently published a report on an Event Supposedly Attributed to Vaccination or Immunization (ESAVI) against COVID-19 in Peru. Most of the reports correspond to citizens immunized with Sinopharm.

On the subject, Digemid clarified that ESAVIs cannot be considered adverse reactions attributed to the vaccine until a causal relationship with its administration is confirmed, in addition, said information is subject to possible modifications.

Along these lines, the report indicates that from February 9 (the day vaccination began in Peru) until December 31, a total of 31,760 reports (mild, moderate and severe) with one or more ESAVI were recorded, of which 50,695,207 administered doses of the vaccine against COVID-19 Until that date.

This number represents 0.06% of the doses administered and corresponds to 62.6 ESAVI reports for every 100,000 doses applied to people.

According to the data collected, people who were vaccinated with doses of the Sinopharm vaccine presented a greater number of ESAVI reports (17,700). They are followed by those who received Pfizer (11,938) and AstraZeneca (2,122).

Women are the most affected

ESAVI reports mostly correspond to women between 30 and 59 years old (13,412). They are followed by men with the same age range (5,723).

“The 31,760 ESAVI cases reported include a total of 65,967 adverse events, because the same case may contain several events, for example: a vaccinated person may have presented fever, pain in the vaccination area and headache after administration of the COVID-19 vaccine″, specifies the report.

What are the reported effects?

These are nervous system disorders such as headache, pain in the vaccination area, pyrexia, malaise, dizziness, drowsiness, pain in a limb, nausea, myalgia, chills, fatigue, diarrhea, arthralgia, vomiting, back pain, among others. .

Cases range from mild to severe

Regarding the severity of the ESAVIs reported, 76.3% (24,236 cases) are mild, 23.4% (7,436) moderate, and 0.3% (87) severe. This last percentage contains cases that are being investigated by the National Center for Epidemiology, Disease Prevention and Control (CDC), to find out if they are related to the administration of the vaccine.

Of the 87 serious/severe ESAVI cases, the CDC classified 23 (20.7%) cases, of which 19 were classified as coincident, three related to the vaccine, and one as inconclusive; the others are still in the process of investigation and classification.

Regarding the outcome of the reported ESAVI cases, 26,173 (82.4%) recovered (resolved), 4036 (12.7%) are recovering (resolving), 1020 (3.2%) the outcome is unknown, 21 (0.1%) with a fatal outcome and three (0.01%) recovered with a sequel.

In this case, Digemid points out that cases with a fatal outcome cannot be considered to be related to the vaccine, since death may be due to their clinical condition (history of illness, concomitant medications, among others).

The causes are being investigated and evaluated by the National Committee in charge of CDC.
