A few days ago, the Executive Power sent to Parliament a bill referring to the beginning of the prescription period for the portfolios of the Ministry of Housing, Banco Hipotecario and the National Housing Agency. The initiative modified the terms to avoid losing 400 million dollars in mortgage loans, for not taking action for two years.

The bill was supported by the legislators of the Broad Front, but they demanded the resignation of the president of the National Housing Agency (ANV), Klaus Mill von Metzen; and the Vice President of said Agency, Gustavo Borsari.

Subsequently, the President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, rejected the possibility of requesting the resignation of the leaders, because after all, he acted on time. He said that he reached with a “slap on the wrist” and it would be too much to get a “red card” from them.

deep concern

This Wednesday, July 20, meanwhile, the Broad Front issued a statement through which it expresses its deep concern about the situation generated in the National Housing Agency “where they were about to prescribe thousands of credits for an amount of about 400 million dollars”, as reported publicly by government authorities.

“The inexperience in the care and management of public resources caused the Parliament to meet with a serious and urgent nature to consider a four-year extension to the terms given by article 467 of the Law of Urgent Consideration (LUC) and in this way avoid its prescription”, indicated the FA.

The left questioned that the parties of the government coalition “could not guarantee the approval of the project with their votes because their legislators were not present in the Chamber, for which the institutional loyalty and the republican commitment of the Broad Front were essential.”

“It is clear once again that the approval of the LUC eroded the legislative quality and triggered a succession of errors that could be, if the FA did not mediate political responsibility, a death blow to the financial sustainability of the ANV”, the left said in a statement.

It was also indicated that during the approval process of the LUC, the FA stated that it agreed with the modification of the deadlines, but with a study of the impacts that said modifications could have on the legal system and therefore voted against its approval. “express” treatment in the LUC. What happened in the ANV “shows that this study was totally necessary.”

“Once again, the government’s difficulties in managing public policies and the negative impacts that this form of government generates on the people are exposed,” questioned the Broad Front.

On the other hand, the left expressed its support for the director of the Front in the ANV, Verónica Dodera, who in carrying out her duties reported the seriousness of the matter.

“In a present of drifting housing policy, without any certainty about the possibility for resources to address the problem of settlements, or the construction of new units, the government put the political housing system at risk,” questioned the FA .

The statement states that “unfortunately”, on this issue, what was proposed in the electoral campaign is also not fulfilled. “The promised 50,000 homes were ‘a way of saying’ and ‘settlement zero’ was ‘an aspirational goal,’ criticized the FA, clearly alluding to the Minister of Housing, Irene Moreira.

In addition, “it is not known how much or from what source the announced resources will come. The government announcements are part of the problem and no solution”, lamented the FA.
