Majes Siguas II: Arequipa Regional Council approves addendum 13

Arequipa: more than 100,000 jobs at risk due to the Majes Siguas II project

The situation of the irrigation project , which is located in Arequipa, has aroused the concern of the Association for the Promotion of National Infrastructure (AFIN). The business union has alerted that there are more than 100,000 jobs that are at risk.

“AFIN expresses its great concern at the current situation of the project Majes Siguas II and the confusion that is taking place between the different mechanisms to develop public service infrastructures”, highlighted the union.

In this context, the union highlighted that Majes as a project “has had years of inconveniences and delays due to lack of definition, whimsical interpretations of the contract and failure to comply with the obligations of the state counterpart.” And this despite the fact that a concession contract implies obligations for both parties: State and concessionaire.

“The solution to direct the project is to approve the technical files, make the decisions that have to be made by contract and move quickly,” highlighted AFIN.

Regarding the agreements and Government to Government or G2G, RELATED considered that these are exceptional solutions “for certain types of relevant interventions that also require a solvent government counterpart.”

“Majes Siguas II is an emblematic project for Arequipa and the entire south of the country. Putting its continuity at risk means ceasing to generate, according to estimates, more than 100,000 direct and indirect jobs for the population in its area of influence. To this must be added the impact on taxes that will not be collected and the great opportunities to develop agro-exports in the region that do not exist today,” the union highlighted.
