11J protester denounces false accusation and government repression

HAVANA, Cuba.- From the Valle Grande maximum rigor prison, located in the municipality of La Lisa, west of the Cuban capital, political prisoner Cervantes Borges Chacón, a 11J protester, denounces that he has been falsely accused of a crime that he did not commit

Cervantes Borges, 34 years old and a resident of the Centro Habana municipality, in this capital, denounced that he was arrested on July 23, 2021 on charges of having thrown a stone at a police officer during the popular protests that shook the country on July 11, 2021.

With a prosecutor’s request for six years in prison for the alleged crimes of attack and public disorder, Cervantes Borges Chacón was finally sentenced to five years for attack.

As he told CubaNet, the trial was held on March 10, 2022 in the Criminal Section of the Popular Municipal Court of Central Havana. At the hearing, officers Osmay Mora Fernández and Reinier Duverger Cuesta stated that Cervantes had thrown a stone at officer Andrés Luis Bernis Guerra, however, a neighbor showed up to testify that this was not true.

The witness’s testimony was dismissed on the pretext of being neighbors and friends. The video taken by the protester himself was not considered either.

During the process it was established that the stoned officer did not see the person who threw the stone at him. On the other hand, Borges Chacón points out that one of the agents who testified against him in the trial, officer Osmay Mora Fernández, has been harassing him for more than two years because of his criminal record.

The protester emphasizes that after his unjust incarceration his mother has worn herself out looking for a solution and has not even managed to get an interview. He also wonders: “Where is the truth that they teach the world so much? Who will do for the people? When will we be respected and free?

Similarly, Cervantes Borges Chacón regrets having been imprisoned without having committed a crime and being separated from his son of just over two years.
