UN Head Celebrates Declaration of Humanitarian Truce in Ethiopia

Through a statement, the highest representative of the United Nations stressed that the conflict in that country caused terrible suffering to millions of people in Afar, Amhara, Tigray, Benishangul Gumz and Oromia.

These positive developments must now translate into immediate improvements on the ground, said the Portuguese diplomat.

In this regard, Guterres reiterated his call for the restoration of public services in Tigray, including banking, electricity and telecommunications.

He also called on all parties to proactively enable and facilitate the delivery of desperately needed humanitarian assistance in all affected areas.

The highest representative of the United Nations urged all parties to the conflict to take advantage of this encouraging event in order to take steps towards a long-term ceasefire.

The African Union (AU) today also celebrated the recent humanitarian truce declared by the Ethiopian government, with the aim of saving lives and reducing the suffering of citizens in the state of Tigray.

Through a statement, the organization stated that it welcomes the decision, under which the federal authorities will take extraordinary measures to accelerate humanitarian assistance and prevent further instability and displacement in the area.

After an attack by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) on the National Defense Forces, the war broke out in northern Ethiopia in November 2020, spreading in the middle of last year to the Afar and Amhara regions. .

Before the end of 2021, the Ethiopian army liberated the occupied areas in those states, where -according to official reports- one million 800 thousand people were displaced and eight million 300 thousand were left in a situation of food insecurity.

However, it did not advance towards Tigray, the extreme north where the members of the TPLF, declared terrorist by Parliament, take refuge, and the armed conflict continues without a definitive outcome.
