Last Monday, March 28, the plenary session of Congress voted against vacating the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo, due to permanent moral incapacity. With 55 votes in favour, 54 against and 19 abstentionsthe initiative promoted by an opposition sector of Congress did not get the support required to relieve the president of office.
Thus, Castillo will continue to lead the country and will keep the position designated by popular mandate, because to remove it the support of a minimum of 87 parliamentarians was neededa figure very far from the one obtained after the debate and presentation of the president.
Previously, when the Congress admitted the presidential vacancy motion to debate, obtaining 76 votes in favor, 41 against and 1 abstentions. This multiparty initiative was initially presented by Renovación Popular Congressman Jorge Montoya on Tuesday, March 8, and was supported by Popular Force, Advance Country, Alliance for Progress, We are Peru and We Can Peru.
