Sedatu promotes updating of 500 urban development programs

The Secretariat of Agrarian, Territorial and Urban Development (Sedatu) does not want to let more time pass and has asked legislators to strengthen the regulatory framework regarding the planning and territorial conformation.

Agency officials held a meeting with legislators from the commission of Urban Development and Territorial Planning of the Chamber of Deputies, where various issues regarding the regulatory framework were discussed and the panorama in this regard was shown.

“A legal framework is required to promote development and land use planning in a more equitable and fair way; in addition to supporting municipal governments to consolidate and update their planning tools so that Mexicans can exercise their right to the city,” said Román Meyer Falcón, head of Sedatu.

At the meeting, Sedatu officials reported that currently 25% of the municipalities have a urban Development and it is necessary to strengthen the Regulatory frameworkso that at least 500 schemes are updated in this regard in different entities.

According to the authorities, in Mexico there are 8.5 million homes that have some type of housing lag and eight out of 10 require an improvement and expansion solution.

In his speech, Daniel Fajardo Ortiz, Undersecretary of Urban Development and Housing of the Sedatu, he noted that the updating of these 500 programs is a goal never before raised in the country; however, to achieve this, the sum of the wills of the three levels of government is required.

In this context, Fajardo Ortiz asked the legislators to promote a point of agreement to urge municipal governments to update their instruments of planning and encourage the growth in their regions.

According to the figures presented, during this administration Sedatu has carried out the following actions:

  • Construction of 751 works.
  • Execution of 191,000 housing actions.
  • Conclusion of 71 municipal plans.
  • Delivery of 28,000 deeds.
