Reform and carry on

In recent months, a crime wave has been growing in New York, specifically in the Bronx and Manhattan, which was believed to have been overcome since Mayor Rudolph Giuliani took over the city government in 1994, and applied the so-called “Theory of broken windows”, which blames vandalism and deterioration of neighborhoods for attracting addicts, prowlers, who in turn are followed by delinquents and violent criminals.

Back then, crime had gotten out of control and the NYPD had lost every battle.

It was the strong hand against crime, applied by Giuliani and his controversial “Civic Cleanliness”, which restored the confidence of decent people to once again travel through the streets of the city without fear of being assaulted or murdered, in the same way restored the authority that the uniformed men had lost.
That, without a doubt, was hard work that paid off. Exit. It is undeniable that without firmness one cannot think of facing a problem as serious as the one that the Big Apple faced then and as the one that the Dominican Republic has suffered for years.

With the aforementioned, from the city of New York, the importance of following up on the plans that are implemented to solve any difficult situation has become clear, in the same way, it demonstrates that antisocials only wait for the slightest breach to make the their own and impose their law.

In our country there is talk of a police reform, a hopeful initiative, which everyone hopes will yield the expected results. The people who make up the different commissions that work on said reform constitute an endorsement of the seriousness with which President Luis Abinader has taken on the issue.
The times deserve a more modern, technological, capable police, but also more integrated with the community, and above all made up of honorable and honest men, in whom people see support. Someone to trust.

In the same way, the current and future authorities must give continuity to everything that is done today, otherwise it will be a waste of time and intense and careful work, with the risk that every day, criminals perfect their practices and become more difficult to deal with.

The entrance Reform and carry on was first published in The Caribbean Newspaper.
