Director Pro Consumidor acusa a sectores de oposición asumir postura «irracional» frente a proyecto ley tasa cero

Pro-Consumer Director accuses opposition sectors of assuming an “irrational” stance against the zero-rate bill

The executive director of the National Institute for the Protection of Consumer Rights (Pro Consumidor), Eddy Alcántara, accused sectors of the opposition of assuming an “irrational position” against the draft of law that seeks to tax at zero rate the tariff of food products of the family basket for a period of six months.

Alcántara argued in this regard that both the Dominican Liberation Party (PLD) and the People’s Force (FP) “show a disinterest for the population to benefit from cheaper food in the midst of global inflation.”

“With this position that these parties assume, they only seek a political interest in their electoral campaign at the wrong time,” he added.

He called on the PLD and the FP to put aside their political interests and think about the most needy sectors, which have been the most affected by the global crisis resulting from the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic and the war between Russia and Ukraine.

The official stated that the intention of the government of President Luis Abinader “has been to respect the rule of law, the investment climate and legal certainty, taking the discussion of this bill to a plural and concerted space such as the National Congress”.

“Faced with this moment of great uncertainty, the Dominican government has sided with the people and has implemented extraordinary measures to alleviate the economic situation generated after the pandemic, granting greater social aid and subsidies to mitigate the impact of these increases in classes. most vulnerable,” he said.

Alcántara recalled that the bill was approved by the Chamber of Deputies in the first reading.

The director of Pro Consumidor said that the legislative piece is an initiative of the Executive Branch that in its sole article states that “they are provisionally taxed at a zero (0) rate in the customs tariff, for a period of six months, counted from as of the entry into force of this law, the goods classified in the eight-digit tariff subheadings of the Harmonized System established in Annex I of Law No. 146-00”.
