Yesterday the secretary general of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, closed the 52nd session of the General Assembly of this organization, posing new challenges for Latin America and the Caribbean, in a context of political, economic and food crisis.
“I congratulate the work and the substance worked on here, which has identified the variables. We have to provide more and better education for everyone. We have to produce more wealth. The peoples cannot get ahead with the distribution of misery. We have to be more effective in the fight against climate change. Every human right must be protected,” Almagro said at the Lima Convention Center in San Borja. The Foreign Minister Cesar Landa I was by his side, as head of this assembly.
Thus came to an end this period of meetings between 34 delegations from this region to address and propose solutions to inequality and discrimination on this continent.
The general committee of this session deliberated nine draft resolutions: international law, strengthening democracy, comprehensive development, political crisis and human rights in Nicaragua, Lima declaration against inequality and discrimination, food security, recovery and strengthening of the health system, women’s leadership and gender equality and promotion and protection of human rights.

OAS defends Argentina
As a preliminary step to this closure, the session approved a resolution defending Argentina’s position on the Falkland Islands and recommended that the solution to this dispute with the United Kingdom – which currently has control of the islands – be peaceful.
The country that presented the draft resolution was Brazil. The ambassador of this country, Octavio Brandelli, stressed that the interest in solving this problem is permanent throughout the hemisphere.
