More than 72,000 Cuban migrants crossed Honduras in 2022

MIAMI, United States. – 39.4% of all migrants who arrived in Honduras this year (72,466) are Cuban, according to statistics from the National Institute of Migration (INM) of that Central American country consulted by EFE news agency.

The number of Cubans who arrived in Honduras in the last 12 months represents an increase of 1310%. In the previous year, only 5,139 island nationals arrived in Honduras (generally as part of their journey to the southern border of the United States).

The Central American country also specified that as of December 23, 183,824 migrants heading to the United States had entered Honduras this year, the majority from Cuba and Venezuela. This figure represents 954.4% more than in the same period of 2021, according to official data.

Cuba lives an unprecedented migratory crisis, in which the rafters intercepted by the United States Coast Guard in the Straits of Florida are counted, as well as the nationals who travel to Nicaragua and undertake the journey to the southern border of the northern country (passing through Honduras).

Just last November, a total of 34,675 Cuban migrants arrived at the southern border of the United Stateswhich represents 21% more than those who arrived in October (28,848).

Meanwhile, a total of 35,849 Cubans entered the northern country through all border points, according to recent data from the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Office.

In a statement The entity highlighted that in said period there was a considerable increase in Cuban and Nicaraguan migrants intercepted at the border.

The CPB noted that this increase is due to “the large number of people fleeing failed communist regimes in Nicaragua and Cuba.”

“People from Mexico and northern Central America accounted for just 30% of unique encounters in November, a significant drop from the 53% they accounted for a year ago, as more migrants arrive from a variety of other countries, including Cuba and Nicaragua”, the information indicates.

The number of people arriving at the southwest land border in November 2022 was 204,155, an increase of 4% from the previous month, largely driven by higher numbers of people arriving from Cuba and Nicaragua.
