Leonel: “the Constitution needs to be respected”

Santo Domingo.- The former president and leader of the political party La Fuerza del Pueblo, Leonel Fernandez, considered yesterday, Wednesday, that “we must allow the Constitution to consolidate over time” and that “it cannot be changed every 4 years.”

When questioned by the press about his opinion regarding a possible reform of the Constitution by the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM), Leonel added that the Magna Carta needs stability, because “more than changing it, it needs to be respected.”

“One does not know exactly what the President wants with the constitutional reform… he has insisted that he wants a reform to guarantee the independence of the Public Ministry and now he says that it is to put a padlock,” he said.

Likewise, he said that there are still 90 bills that must be approved in Congress to strengthen the constitutional body, which have not yet been known.

Regarding the independence of the MP, he assured that “the constitution says that the Ministry has functional, administrative and operational autonomy. Also, the organic law of this says that it is an independent body of all power of the State. Therefore, the Public Ministry is already independent.”
