Diplomats from eleven countries meet in Panama to discuss irregular migration

The delegations from 11 countries, participating in the Regional Conference on Migration (CRM), arrived in Panama and began a working tour in the province of Darién, an area in which the largest irregular flow of migrants in the Isthmus is concentrated.

According to Vice Foreign Minister Marta Elida Gordón, the international delegation is made up of Vice Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Directors of Migration and representatives of observer organizations, who received information related to the care of the migrant population, the measures adopted to address migratory movements with a humanitarian approach , especially for population groups in vulnerable conditions, such as children and adolescents.

Gordon said that this meeting “will serve to learn about part of the crude migratory reality of those who irregularly cross the Darién border, risking their lives. It is an awareness that will help us to have more references to make appropriate decisions in the face of a phenomenon that impacts us all and we must face together”.

This Friday, during the second day of work, at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, delegates from Belize, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, the United States and Canada will exchange good practices in dealing with irregular migration extra-regional and the fight against migrant smuggling and human trafficking, under the principle of shared responsibility.

With this visit, the member states of the RCM will strengthen knowledge in the field for decision-making and coordination actions on issues related to irregular extra-regional migration that is registered by Darién and impacts the entire region.
