Crowd control cleared the Inter-American, Unachi teachers and students protested against Law 756

This morning they closed the Inter-American highway and demanded the presence of President Laurentino Cortizo, to explain to him why they refuse the point that establishes the re-election in this house of higher studies.

A group of students, teachers and administrators from the Autonomous University of Chiriquí (Unachi) once again took to the streets to demand that the President of the Republic partially veto Law No.756, which allows for the re-election of Rector Etelvina Bonagas.

This morning they closed the Inter-American highway and demanded the presence of President Laurentino Cortizo, to explain to him why they refuse the point that establishes the re-election in this house of higher studies.

One of the professors explained that in previous elections they supported the rector, but said that she has already been in power for too long “as Simón Bolívar said, a person in power for a long time becomes a tyranny,” he said.

They assured that if President Cortizo wishes to help teachers with the social and favorable aspects of the Law, he must partially veto it.

After several hours of closure in front of Unachi, crowd control units went to the scene and cleared the road using pepper spray and police force.

Given this, teachers and students reported that they were suffering from allergies due to the chemicals they used to clear the road.

In social networks, students claimed that the police used excessive force to get them off the road.
