Controversy by lyrics "Azuquita for coffee": mayor will not prohibit the song or impose it

The Municipality of San José will not prohibit, but will not imposethe interpretation of the emblematic song of tropical music Azuquita for coffeewhose lyrics generated controversy in the municipal band of the department.

A member of the band had claimed that the song –originally by the Gran Combo from Puerto Rico but performed in Uruguay by various tropical music groups, such as Grupo Casino– reinforced gender stereotypes for the content of the letter. This was endorsed by other musiciansfor which a file was initiated to analyze the case and make a definition, as reported days ago by the local media San José Ahora.

The Departmental Board of Gender and Diversity, for its part, approved a resolution in which it was ensured that Azuquita for coffee reinforced “gender stereotypes that violate women’s human rights.” That way, He considered that it was not pertinent for the municipal band to broadcast the song.

However, the mayor of San José, Ana Bentaberri, told Radio 41 that once the resolution of the Departmental Gender and Diversity Board was disseminated – with the recommendation that the song be excluded from the repertoire – she asked the legal department for advice of the commune

“Today the corresponding advice arrived telling us that the interpretation of this letter does not have a legal prohibitionthat it does not violate fundamental rights and that the director in his capacity as such is the one who chooses all the topics”, affirmed the hierarch.

Having said that, he pointed out that the mayor’s office resolved that it will not prohibit or impose the interpretation of Azuquita for coffee.

We are not going to prohibit or impose on the band whether or not to interpret a certain song. We are going to return the file to the band and thus we recognize that it is up to the director of the band to choose the songs that are going to be interpreted, “he affirmed. “The song is not going to be prohibited nor are we going to impose it. It will be at the director’s discretion,” he insisted.

The lyrics of Azuquita for coffee

How inspired the creator when he made the woman
Oh, how good that I asked him to let himself be loved
And brought the world that honey, that must be its name
And I give the men azuquita for coffee

What what, what what, what was, what was
Azuquita for coffee
What what, what what, what was, what was
Azuquita for coffee

And what a beautiful variety, how much there is to choose from
And I don’t care which one, as long as it’s a woman
And there is no gold or diamond, that compares with your love
There surrenders the bravest, the cutest and the best

What what, what what, what was, what was
The cutest and the best
What what, what what, what was, what was
The cutest and the best

From Adam’s rib Hey, God made woman
And I give men a little bone to ‘gnaw
How tasty it is to be cold and get close to a woman
How good is the scoundrel when he lets himself be loved

What what, what what, what was, what was
when he lets himself be loved
What what, what what, what was, what was
when he lets himself be loved
As you like, azuquita for coffee
Honey, that must be her name because they sweeten men with their love
As you like, azuquita for coffee
Whoever has theirs should take good care of it, if the one who has a store must attend to it
As you like, azuquita for coffee
Oh, because anyone who doesn’t attend to their store can lose it, lose it
As you like, azuquita for coffee
When, when the afternoon languishes, the shadow is reborn grinding coffee
As you like, azuquita for coffee
I, I want to be given, to be given, to be given,
Sugar, fuck it, fuck it, fuck it

As you like, azuquita for coffee
How do you like it…! sugar, sugar
