A green hydrogen plant will be installed in Paysandú: What is it and how is this fuel produced?

Paysandú Green Hydrogen

The President of the Republic, Luis Lacalle Pou, announced this afternoon in Paysandú that next year a green hydrogen industry will be built in that department, with an investment of more than US$4,000 million.

The projected production of green hydrogen in Paysandú has generated great expectations in Uruguay. This initiative represents an important step towards energy transition and the promotion of renewable sources in the country, which began in the three previous governments: from there comes the shift to sustainable sources and the abandonment of hydrocarbons as the main fuel. With significant investment and job creation, this industry is expected to not only have a positive impact on the local economy, but also contribute to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Green hydrogen in Paysandú: an ANCAP and ALUR project

The green hydrogen plant in Paysandú arose from a competitive project in which various companies participated. According to a statement issued by Ancap, ALUR communicated the result of the competitive process arranged by the Ancap board of directors last year. The objective was to select a developer and a conceptual project for the use of CO2 of biogenic origin emitted by the Paysandú plant.

The project presented by HIF Global was selected, due to its extensive experience in similar projects. HIF Global has successfully developed green hydrogen projects in the United States, Australia and Chile, consolidating itself as a benchmark in the production of sustainable energy at an international level.

Importance of green hydrogen

Green hydrogen is a clean and renewable energy source that is produced from the electrolysis of water using renewable energy. Unlike conventional hydrogen, which is obtained from fossil fuels, green hydrogen does not emit CO2 during its production or when it is used as a fuel. This makes it a key alternative to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and mitigate climate change.

In addition to its positive environmental impact, green hydrogen also has energy benefits. It can be stored and used as a source of energy in various sectors, such as transport, industry and electricity generation. Its versatility and decarbonization capacity make it a strategic resource to achieve the transition towards a more sustainable economy free of fossil fuels.
