Sánchez, 44, will assume the leadership of the opposition transition team, which will take the reins of the government on March 1, 2025. Current leader of the Senate list of the Popular Participation Movement (MPP), Sánchez was also Orsi’s campaign manager during the electoral process.
In his career, Sánchez was elected deputy for the first time in 2010. Later, he became a senator when former president José Mujica left his seat in the Upper House.
Sánchez expressed his gratitude through his account on the social network X and will have to resign from his seat in the Senate of the Republic upon assuming this new role.
I appreciate the trust of Yamandú Orsi for having called me to occupy the position of Secretary of the Presidency. Always with the commitment to work for a better Uruguay for everyone and everything,” said the re-elected senator in X, culminating with the phrase that was the campaign slogan: “We will know how to deliver.”
Sánchez led the list 609 to the Senate, with José Mujica as his first substitute, although it is presumed that he will not assume the bench either. The next on the list is Cecilia Cairo, whose name also sounds alongside Lucía Etcheverry as a possible member of the Ministry of Housing, which would take her to the Executive. The third substitute is the former mayor of Rocha, Aníbal Pereyra.
