Workers’ income drops 9.7% in one year, says IBGE

The data, from the Continuous National Household Sample Survey (Continuous PNAD), were released today (18) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

The mass of usual real income (R$ 232.6 billion) was stable in both comparisons.

The survey released today also shows that the unemployment rate stood at 11.2% in January this year, below the rates of October (12.1%) and January 2021 (14.5%).

The underutilized population, that is, those who are unemployed, those who work less than they could and people who could work but are not looking for a job, reached 27.8 million people, a decline of 7.2% (down 2.2 million) compared to the previous quarter and 15.5% (5.1 million less) in the annual comparison.

The compound underutilization rate (23.9%) dropped 1.9 percentage points compared to the August-October quarter (25.7%) and 5.1 percentage points compared to the quarter ended in January 2021 (29% ).

The population outside the labor force (64.9 million people) remained stable when compared to the previous quarter and fell (3.9 million people less) in the annual comparison.

The discouraged population, that is, those who gave up looking for a job, stood at 4.8 million people, a reduction of 6.3% (322 thousand people less) compared to the previous quarter and of 18.7% ( minus 1.1 million people) in the annual comparison.

Jobs with portfolio

The number of employees with a formal contract in the private sector (excluding domestic workers) was 34.6 million people, 2% more (681 thousand people) than October and 9.3% higher (2.9 million people) than January 2021.

The number of employees without a formal contract in the private sector (12.4 million people) grew 3.6% (427 thousand people) in relation to October and 19.8% (2 million people) in the year.

The number of self-employed (25.6 million people) was stable compared to the previous quarter, but rose 10.3% (2.4 million more people) in the year.

Domestic workers (5.6 million people) showed stability compared to the previous quarter, but rose 19.9% ​​(931 thousand people more) in the year.
