Women in Colombia earn up to 36% less than men

The Colombian Federation of Human Management (Acrip) presented the findings of the National Research on Salaries and Benefits that it carries out each year, and One of the most outstanding results of the study is the evident wage gap by gender.

The report, which shows an x-ray of the salary situation in Colombia with data from more than 1,200 companies of all sizes in the country’s 32 departments, points out that, for example, a man in a senior management position earns 36% more salary than a woman.

The same happens with all organizational levels: a man in middle management receives 13% more than a woman; a man as a senior professional is paid 8% more than a woman; a junior professional 4% more, a technician 6% more, and male base personnel up to 24% more.

According to Mónica García Espinel, executive director of Acrip, “It is a pity that professional and salary gaps between men and women continue to exist in the country, even though the responsibilities are the same, and the working conditions are sometimes even more difficult for women.”

In general terms, the study also revealed the average remuneration according to organizational levels: for a senior management position, the average total remuneration per month is $26,967,094, while for a middle management it is $13,156,709; a senior professional earns approximately $5,982,340, a junior professional $4,148,429, a technician $1,988,431 and basic personnel (operators, secretaries, security, etc.) the average is $1,694,236.

Regarding economic sectors, the investigation found that those with the best salaries are the food and beverage sectors; chemical and pharma; and construction materials. While the least competitive salaries are in the contact center and retail sectors.

Thus, while an employee in a senior management position in the construction materials sector may earn, on average, from 45 to 50 million pesos; An employee with the same managerial position, but in the contact center sector, receives an average of 15 million pesos.

Similarly, if a senior professional in the chemical and pharmaceutical sector earns an average of $8,500,000, the same senior professional in the retail sector receives at most $3,800,000.

By departments, the study detailed that Cundinamarca, Antioquia and Valle del Cauca lead the top of the areas with the best salary allocations.

INCREASE IN THE MINIMUM AFFECTED COMPANIES

Along with the development of the National Research on Salaries and Benefits, Acrip, in alliance with the firm Lulotec, carried out a pulse with 100 companies located in the main cities of the country, to know their perception regarding the increase in the minimum wage for 2022.

The main result was that seven out of ten companies stated that the 10% increase affected their budget projections for 2022.

Likewise, in the pulse, 88% of the country’s businessmen stated that they would only apply the 10% increase for positions with minimum wage allocation, while 13% said that they would adjust all wages on this basis.
