Wife of 11J protester: “The trial was a lie”

MIAMI, United States.- Cuban Wendy Pedraza, wife of José Miguel Gómez Mondeja, one of the protesters of July 11 (11J) in the city of Santa Clara, denounced that her husband’s trial, in which 15 other protesters were also triedIt was a lie.

After three months of waiting, last week Gómez Mondeja’s family learned that of the six years in prison that the Prosecutor’s Office had requested for her husband, the Municipal Court had sentenced him to four years in prison for the alleged crimes of “ public disorder” and “disrespect”.

The trial, which was held in January and lasted five days, Pedraza assures that it was a lie, since the evidence presented never indicted him.

“On the first day they declared, on the second day the Prosecutor’s Office showed the videos that supposedly accused the accused, and brought their witnesses. They never put a video of him, and all the witnesses denied themselves, because they never saw him in the same place.

Pedraza assured CubaNet that Gómez Mondeja, 25, was at the demonstration, and that he went to ask for medicine and for the blackouts to end and everything that Cubans were going through.

“My husband was arrested on July 11 in the afternoon, and until the 12th I was able to find out where he was. He then spent seven days in Criminal Investigation, until they informed me that the case had passed to the Prosecutor’s Office, and that he was going to be transferred to La Pendiente “.

Wendy Pedraza communicated with her husband for the first few months through letters, since visits to the prison were restricted by COVID-19. She always, she explained, she hoped to eventually get out because she hadn’t done anything, “she didn’t throw stones, she didn’t have any problems with any police.”

However, when he learned that he would be tried, he stayed inside the prison for 10 days, “until they gave us the opportunity to talk to him, and I told him that we were out here to fight, that he should not put his life at risk, we have a five-year-old girl who needs it,” he explained.
