In a letter sent to the president of Congress, Maria del Carmen Alva, Walter Gutierrez today presented his irrevocable resignation to the position of Ombudsman for which he was elected on September 7, 2016.
In the document, Gutiérrez Camacho recalls that his constitutional period of five years was completed last September, after which he remained a reasonable time waiting for the Congress of the Republic to elect his successor.
However, he pointed out that since this appointment is still pending, under the protection of a resolution of the Ombudsman, he has entrusted the functions of the Ombudsman to the first deputy, Dr. Eliana Rebollar, until Congress appoints her replacement.
In the official letter, Gutiérrez expresses his appreciation to all State institutions that throughout these years have complied with collaborating with the Ombudsman’s Office.
He also thanks the commissioners, officials and staff in general of the institution “for their excellent work and unwavering commitment to the serious and challenging task of defending fundamental rights and preserving the democratic system.”
In recent months, Walter Gutiérrez, from his position as Ombudsman, made repeated calls and warnings about the behavior of the government of Pedro Castillo in terms of respect for fundamental rights and freedoms.
In that order, he questioned the appointment of ministers unfit for the position and called for respect for the freedom of the press and expression of citizens, among others.
