Venezuelan government remembers Fidel Castro on the 96th anniversary of his birth

The Government of Venezuela commemorated this Saturday the 96th anniversary of the birth of former Cuban President Fidel Castro, who died in 2016 after ruling the country for almost half a century and becoming one of the most controversial political figures in contemporary history.

The Venezuelan president, Nicolás Maduro, expressed, through his Twitter account, that he celebrates, “together with the people” the 96th anniversary of the birth of the “leader of the Cuban revolution.”

Together with our Cuban brothers, we celebrate the 96th anniversary of the birth of the leader of the Cuban revolution, Fidel Castro Ruz. His vision of socialism continues to light the way for peoples struggling for dignity, respect and sovereignty. Long live Fidel forever!” wrote the head of state.

The foreign minister, Carlos Faría, highlighted the “life and legacy” of Castro, “which inspires the peoples of the world to remain firm on a safe path towards the consolidation of the dream of an independent, humanistic and prosperous homeland.”

“His impetus in the fight against capitalism and imperialism will always be a beacon of light that guides the path towards the construction of the new stage of transformation and development for Latin America,” he added.

This Friday, Venezuela inaugurated the photographic exhibition “Commander in Chief”, in commemoration of the 96th anniversary of Castro’s birth, at the headquarters of the Foreign Ministry, in Caracas, with 22 images of key moments in the life of the Cuban leader.

The remains of Castro, who was born on August 13, 1926 in Birán, in eastern Cuba, rest in the Santa Ifigenia cemetery in the province of Santiago de Cuba.

In 1959, he led the revolution that placed the Caribbean island in the spotlight of the international scene for 47 uninterrupted years, ruling with a Caribbean version of Soviet communism and having the United States as its main enemy.
