MIAMI, United States. — The United States Coast Guard (USGC) repatriated this Monday 38 Cuban rafters who had been intercepted last week in the Florida Keys.
An release released by that organization indicates that the migrants were returned to Cuba by the crew of the Paul Clarks coast guard.
The note contains statements by Lieutenant Paul Puddington, security officer of the Seventh Coast Guard District, who warned about the dangers of jumping into the sea to reach the United States.
“We urge families in the US not to encourage family and friends in other countries to attempt these dangerous sea voyages.”
Likewise, the officer assured that Coast Guard air and surface crews, along with other partner agencies, “work together every day maintaining an active presence in the Florida Straits to help save lives by deterring these dangerous voyages.”
The Cuban rafters were intercepted between Wednesday and Friday of last week in different operations carried out in sectors of Key West.
Prior to their deportation to the Island, the Coast Guard provided food, water, shelter, and basic medical care to all migrants.
From October 1, 2021 to date, the crews of the United States Coast Guard intercepted a total of 1,546 Cubans, a figure only comparable to those registered at the time of the “Dry feet, wet feet” policy, repealed in 2017. by then President Barack Obama.
