The Democratic Unitary Platform gave its “full support” to the National Primary Commission, which said it will move forward with the process to choose the opposition candidate who will go to an upcoming presidential contest. This body affirmed that after the resignation of several rectors and substitutes of the National Electoral Council (CNE), it will continue with self-managed elections and with manual voting.
“We in the Democratic Unitary Platform say to all Venezuelans that in view of the autonomous decision made by the CNPwe give our full backing and support to this decision,” said Juan Carlos Caldera, leader of Primero Justicia (PJ) and member of the PU on the afternoon of this Friday, June 16.
“We have a National Primary Commission at the level of responsibility that Venezuela claims, a Commission that has been preparing for any scenario, who confidently tells Venezuelans that she is ready to move on. We want to congratulate you on the decision you have made (…) We remain firm, we remain united on the path of building unity, appealing to the decision of the people in the Primary election,” he added.
During this Friday, several leaders of opposition parties gave the CNP a boost after announcing the continuation of the primary process, despite the fact that they will not have the support of the Venezuelan electoral body. Among them, Henrique Capriles who reported that his team will record before the National Commission for Primary a proposal to hold the elections on October 22 “in the widest possible way.”
For their part, Delsa Solórzano and Andrés Velásquez supported the holding of self-managed primary elections and the Voluntad Popular party, in the voice of Adriana Pichardo and Freddy Superlano, indicated that the parties must do their part for “robust primaries.”
