Ukraine calls Russia a 'terrorist state' at the UN

Ukraine’s resolution, co-sponsored by more than 40 countries, will show Russia’s degree of isolation in the international community after seven months of war in Ukraine

Ukraine described Russia as a “terrorist state”, this Monday, October 10, after the Russian bombings in its territory condemned by the United Nations Organization (UN) and the West, when presenting before this instance a resolution condemning the annexation of regions of this country by Moscow.

“Russia has once again shown that it is a terrorist state that must be deterred in the strongest possible way,” said the Ukrainian ambassador, Sergiy Kyslytsya, after the rain of missiles and drones that fell on Ukrainian territory and that have claimed the lives of at least 11 people and has injured 64, reported AFP.

For his part, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, also condemned these attacks and said that they are “a new unacceptable escalation of the war” and show, according to US President Joe Biden, “the absolute brutality” of the Russian president. Vladimir Putin. European diplomacy branded them “barbaric” and NATO as “horrible and indiscriminate.”

Ukraine’s resolution, co-sponsored by more than forty countries, will show how isolated Russia is in the international community after seven months of war in Ukraine.

Russia, which on September 30 vetoed a similar resolution in the Security Council, suffered its first defeat shortly after the start of this emergency meeting of the General Assembly.

His insistence that the vote be secret to avoid “enormous pressure from the United States and its allies” caused three votes and was finally rejected by a landslide: 100 votes, compared to the 14 he obtained in favor, including those of Cuba, China or Nicaragua, and 38 abstentions.

The 193 UN countries will vote on the “illegal” annexations of the Ukrainian regions of Donetsk, Lugansk, Kherson and Zaporizhia, after the “so-called referendums” held at the end of September, which “have no validity under international law.”

The resolution, which is co-sponsored by 44 countries, also asks that no one recognize these annexations and demands the immediate withdrawal of Russian troops from Ukraine.
