Inmates at the San Carlos Preventive Arrest and Detention Center, in the Colón municipality of Zulia state, have been protesting since last Friday. They denounce an outbreak of tuberculosis in the different areas of the prison.
Tuberculosis
“We have an epidemic of chronic tuberculosis and our colleagues are suffering. Eight days ago, Mr. Nelson Fernández died and they are not giving us a prompt response to the situation of overcrowding,” said one of the inmates in a video released by Una Ventana a la Libertad and replicated by We monitor.
“I remind you that this is a detention center built for 80 people and we have an overcrowding of 530 prisoners in this compound,” added the man.
The inmates also assured that if they do not receive a response to the situation inside the prison in the next few hours, they will begin a hunger strike.
“Enough that they play with our lives. We are human beings, it hurts us that our families, ours, ours are being extorted,” stressed one of them.
According to his claim, at least 25 cases of tuberculosis have not been confirmed due to the lack of resources for medical examinations in clinics.
