Workers who did not adhere to the 24 hour strike from this Tuesday they were expelled of the Trade Union Association of Transport Cooperatives and Workers (Ascot), reported El País and confirmed to The Observer union leader Julio Spinetti.
“It is a resolution of the congress. The compañero who is affiliated to the union and who works on days of unemployment, who does not respect the union measure, is automatically disaffiliated from the union. We already had experience from other people and that was voted on at the last congress,” Spinetti explained.
This is the “first time” that this measure has been taken.
The disaffiliated were “two or three”, who had made the same decision in another instance. “There was another precedent that what happened now had happened with the same people”, Spinetti maintained.
Marcelo Marrero, also a union leader, explained to El País that the measure was applied “after much notice”. “If one goes against the principles of the organization, there is no point in joining it,” she argued.
Nationalist senator Sergio Botana spoke about it on his Twitter account. “They are spreading this on networks. I do not believe a UNION of our Country presses its affiliates in this way to force them to stop. Clarification will surely come,” wrote the former mayor of Cerro Largo.

The 24-hour strike on Tuesday started initially with the move by the transport union to stop and perform a mobilization before the Legislative Palace. The measure is in protest of the social security reform whose articles will be voted on Tuesday in the Chamber of Deputies.
Later several unions adhered to the measure and finally the PIT-CNT.
