There was a time, which now looks indeterminate and anchored in the past, when Mercedes Menafra could not resist listening to the recorded voice of Jorge Batlle. She couldn’t even tolerate reproducing in her mind the euphoric sound of her ex-husband’s words, nor looking at photos or reading the obituaries that were piled up on a table until she had them taken out of there.
