Tourism activity in the city of São Paulo increased by 39% in 2021 compared to 2020, according to the Monthly Tourism Activity Index, an indicator measured by the São Paulo Trade Federation (Fecomercio-SP). The number of people employed in the sector grew by 5% in the year, closing 2021 with 400,000 jobs in the capital of São Paulo.
According to Fecomercio, the hiring seeks to meet the increased demand at events, airports and bus stations. According to the federation, it is a recomposition of the company’s staff after the drop caused by the covid-19 pandemic.
Hotel occupancy also grew in 2021, with an increase of 86% compared to 2020. In December last year, occupancy reached 58.9%, while in the same month of the previous year it was 31.4%. In Fecomercio’s assessment, the index shows that the sector is returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The federation also highlights that the capital of São Paulo has benefited from the advance of vaccination, allowing the economic reopening in the city.
There was also an increase in the movement of airports in the capital of São Paulo, with 4.5 million passengers in December, 49% more than in the same month of 2020.
“The consistency in the results in the city of São Paulo serves as a good indicator of what can happen in other capitals of the country. It is essential, however, to keep attention on all issues related to the economy and the pandemic in the coming months”, analyzes the president of the Fecomercio Tourism Board, Mariana Aldrigui.
