Ilich Otero, who worked as a photojournalist in SuchWhichpassed away this Saturday October 22 in Caracas
We knew that he had been suffering from dermatomyositis for a few years, a terrible disease that takes away, whoever points it out, even the will to live. But Ilyich Oterothe charismatic journalist, photojournalist, university professor, scouter and Mason was not one of those who gave up easily, and with the same enthusiasm that he put into covering his assignments as a photojournalist in SuchWhich either in his college activities or in leadership in the Boys Scout organization, he met this fate.
Enthusiastic, generous, supportive, Ilich was an all-terrain worker who entered SuchWhich as a driver and ended up as a photojournalist who seemed to move with the impulse of a missile to capture in images the most difficult situations of the student protests and the repression of the military of this government.
That is why his death, which occurred on Saturday night in Caracas, strikes us furiously because of the respect and affection we had for him in the editorial office of SuchWhich and I imagine that his students and colleagues who shared various activities with him professed him in the same way, in which he stood out for his honesty and simplicity, two virtues with which we now remember him. Ilich is leaving us but his days and nights of photojournalism remain, his audacity to cover the pattern of a demonstration silenced by bullets. There is also a supportive hug for his partner Yesenia Soto, who did not abandon him from the first day of her illness; her mother Danisa Soldo her brothers Leopoldo and María Teresa and Angel; and especially to his children Andrés and Sofía Otero.
Someone said that death does not steal our loved ones. On the contrary, it keeps them for us and immortalizes them in our memory. In the case of Ilich Otero, with all the affection and respect that we always had for him.
