Augustine Palavecino of River Plate and red frames and Luis Vazquez of Boca Juniors are being investigated by Buenos Aires prosecutors, Argentine media reported, after the fierce fight that resulted in seven red cards in River’s 1-0 victory in the Argentine Superclásico on Sunday.
As the match between Argentina’s two most popular teams headed to a goalless draw, the referee awarded a stoppage-time penalty to River which Miguel Ángel Borja converted to give the league leaders the victory, leaving Boca 13th in the table.
Palavecino then celebrated the goal in front of the Boca players, which triggered a brawl that stopped the game for 16 minutes, and the stadium police had to intervene, resulting in the expulsion of three players from each side, as well as the coach of Boca. Mouth, Jorge Almiron.
The Buenos Aires Prosecutor for Massive Acts filed charges against Palavecino and Vázquez for inciting disorder, and Rojo for entering the field without authorization, since the former Manchester United defender did not participate in the match due to injury.
“Marcos went to help the team because he is the captain and he went to collaborate, he did not go to hurt anyone,” Boca Juniors president Jorge Amor told Reuters. “These are the consequences of arbitration by which we feel harmed I am not in favor of any act of violence. Nobody was looking for aggression, it all started after the cry (from Palavecino after the goal). “A lot of people entered the field and they had nothing to do there. I saw a big crowd and I only saw Luis (Vazquez) separating people.”
River Plate president Jorge Brito said he did not like the way the match ended despite their victory and that both teams made mistakes that sparked the fight. “It happens to all of us, that the fan in us comes out and you do something that can upset the other team,” Brito told local station Tyc Sports.
“I think Boca’s reaction was exaggerated but that’s okay. For these things to happen there have to be mistakes on both sides and we have to work so that these things don’t happen again. ‘Pala’ is an intelligent player, he’s a good person and is going to learn from this”.
Palavecino apologized Monday, saying he was sorry for his actions and admitting he couldn’t control himself. “It was a mistake and it’s not the image we want to give in River. There is a way to go down and you have to follow it,” the midfielder told Tyc Sports.
