«Makran» and «Dena», two Iranian ships under US sanctions, docked on February 28 in Rio de Janeiro; permission that has “dismayed” the US
The United States is “dismayed” and “disappointed” by the permission granted by the Brazilian government for the docking of two Iranian warships, the head of US diplomacy for Latin America, Brian Nichols, said this Wednesday, March 15.
“Iran does not have to be in our hemisphere, it is a country responsible for multiple violations of international law, of human rights, of providing weapons of war to Russia, so it is concerning that they have a presence in our region,” Nichols said. ; according to reports from NTN24.

Makran and Dena, two Iranian ships under US sanctions, docked on February 28 in Rio de Janeiro; permission that has “dismayed” Washington. Those ships “have no place” in Latin America, Nichols stressed.
“We have conveyed our dismay,” said Nichols, despite understanding that “Brazil as a sovereign nation makes its own foreign policy decisions.”
The official also noted that the other Latin American countries “decided not to receive the ships and it is not by chance,” but because they have been discussed “about the risks posed by Iran.”
The United States is the largest foreign investor in Brazil, with which in 2024 it will celebrate 200 years of bilateral relations.
Brazil represents an important market, importing nearly $47 billion worth of US products in 2021, Nichols explained.
