The President of the Republic, Nicolás Maduro, received on Monday the Deputy Secretary for Humanitarian Affairs of the United Nations (UN), Martin Griffiths, at the Miraflores Palace.
Griffiths is coordinator of the emergency relief of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.
The visit, which will last until Tuesday, August 2, aims to strengthen alliances “to address some of the most pressing needs,” Griffiths pointed out through his Twitter social network account, @UNReliefChief.
The schedule of activities carried out in Caracas aims to “support ongoing efforts to address humanitarian and social needs; strengthen the provision of basic services. In this sense, Griffiths met this Sunday with UN agencies and national and international NGOs “to better understand her world, including opportunities and challenges.”

It is the first time that the UN representative visits Venezuela after the agreement with the national government to promote the Sustainable Development Goals.
Griffiths, a lawyer with an MA in Southeast Asian Studies from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, has experience in humanitarian affairs at the strategic and operational level, as well as in international conflict resolution, negotiation and mediation.
In 2021, UN Secretary-General António Guterres is appointed Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, after serving as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for Yemen (2018-2021).
