The mayor of Paysandú, Nicolás Olivera, reported through his Twitter account that he decided to disassociate himself from the National Alliance sector of the National Party. “A difficult decision. Ideas come first. Passion intact, ”he wrote in a statement.
“I wanted to convince myself that the time had come for ideas to be above men and names. But after a short time I realized that the void was immense and that it prevented me from taking an accurate course,” Olivera said, adding: “The time has come, after a long and profound time of reflection, to step aside.”
“That May 22, the man who inspired us left, with whom you wanted to give each battle to which he summoned you; he always chose the right side over the convenient one,” he said of the late nationalist leader. He added: “Know that it is strictly forbidden to slack off. The order is there”, the text concluded, in a clear allusion to Jorge Larrañaga’s phrase.
