The expectations of industrial entrepreneurs in relation to the future of the economy and their businesses continued in positive territory in April, although they have been showing a tendency to deteriorate since the beginning of the yearaccording to the latest industrial survey conducted by the Chamber of Industries of Uruguay (CIU).
Business expectations regarding domestic sales increased compared to March, after having fallen in January and February. For their part, expectations regarding exports remained constant in April compared to March, after having shown a downward trend as of January.

“The greater uncertainty at the international level regarding the future economic performance of the world economy as a consequence of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, as well as inflationary pressures would be marking a greater volatility of industrial business expectations”, explains the CIU.
Between January and March, the industry sales in physical volumess increased 6.3% compared to the same period of the previous year, exceeding pre-pandemic levels but decreasing compared to the previous quarter, in seasonally adjusted terms.

Of this total, sales destined for the domestic market decreased 0.8% in the first quarter of 2022 in year-on-year terms, reaching low levels in the pre-pandemic comparison and showing a contraction compared to the immediately previous quarter, excluding seasonality.
For its part, industrial employment, which is one of the most affected variables in recent years, reversed much of the fall of the pandemic but entered a period of stagnation. In the first quarter of 2022, the Employed personnel showed a slight increase, close to 1.3%.
