After five resolutions, the companies Korfield, Montecable, Praimar, Nuevo Siglo and TCC received a Class B Telecommunications License to provide data transmission services. The decision promotes competition in provision, which is essential for the country’s development, said the head of the Communications Services Regulatory Unit (Ursec), Mercedes Aramendía.
Aramendía reported that these concessions were enabled by the Executive Power, after five cable operators filed an action of unconstitutionality against article No. 56 of Law No. 19,307, of December 29, 2014.
Said regulation prohibits the provision of telephone telecommunications services or data transmission to those individuals or legal entities that offer audiovisual communication services.
Since the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) accepted the claim, the companies, from now on, will be able to offer these benefits and provide their users with more options and more freedom to choose, reported Aramendía.
He added that the possibility of specifically repealing this prohibition is being analyzed in Parliament and in the Rendering of Accounts, he said.
