Parishioners of the San Pedro church in Barinitas, Bolívar municipality of Barinas state, experienced a situation of alarm and fear when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.
The incident occurred in the morning hours of this Sunday when more than 20 people were affected, including children and adults who were transferred to the jurisdiction’s hospital.
“That was around 7:00 am. Once the mass began, the commotion of bees broke out inside the church. It was horrible, people started screaming and, thank God, they had incense and they lit in time and it was controlled and the church was closed. A large part of the people remained inside the church, while it was strong in the street,” said sacristan Leonel Bencomo.
Mayor Mayra Jaramillo reported through a statement that upon receiving notification of what happened, citizen security agencies spread out around the place, closing the entire perimeter between Carrera 8 Calle 4 and 5, Carrera 7 Calle 7 and Carrera 5 with Calle 4 and 6th street.
He stated that the situation was controlled by Civil Protection officials, Fire Departments and the rest of the organizations involved and that the streets will remain closed until midnight to maintain security measures and complete the total relocation of the bees.
